LAKE HAWEA STATION
Lake Hawea Station is a longstanding partner of Another Tomorrow. As New Zealand’s first carbon positive woolfarm, it has set a new standard for sustainability, a commitment that is deeply woven into our DNA.
Lake Hawea Station is New Zealand’s first Carbon Positive wool farm, owned and operated by husband and wife duo, Geoff and Justine Ross. In 2018, they purchased Lake Hawea Station, trading city life for farming activism. Since then, their work has proven that farming can be a part of the climate solution.
As they started with gathering emissions data, remote sensing and AI technology helped them measure the amount of carbon captured by their land. Attention to soil nutrition, conservation of biodiversity, commitment to regenerative farming, and use of renewable energy are just a few ways the farm goes beyond zero carbon and captures about 2.5 times the amount of carbon emitted.
This B Corp Certified farm moves their sheep quietly from pasture to pasture allowing them to travel within their friend groups. The most important part of their process is that they don’t reward their shearing teams based on throughput or speed, rather they intentionally reward shearers who create a calm and stress free environment. They often include music throughout the shearing process and once done, the sheep softly land on a mattress.
Geoff and Justine, owners of LHS, have become our dear friends and collaborators through our shared values and vision of a regenerative future. Our partnership with Lake Hawea Station through ZQRX is a multi-year commitment and part of our foundational “farm to closet” philosophy.
